Excerpt from the Labyrinth Companion

The meadow was beautiful, but it’s not really magical, Nancy thought to herself. I wonder what Judy meant; she’s not usually this far off-base. Nathan and Ariel were throwing a ball back and forth, Ralph was polishing off his fifth s’more, and Nancy was putting away the last of the food when Brice called out, “Look! Down at the far end by the bushes. There’s a gate! Can I go take a look?”

“We’ll all go.”

Brice ran ahead of his family. As he approached the gate, he saw there was a sign on it: “THIS WAY TO THE COMPANIONS’ LABYRINTH,” he announced as the others drew near.

“What’s a lab-e-rinth?” asked Ariel.

“It’s a maze!” cried Brice. “C’mon, let’s go!”

“What’s a maze?” asked Nathan, backing away.

“It’s a puzzle,” said Brice. “It’s got all kinds of twists and turns, and you have to find your way to the center without getting lost or stuck.”

“Don’t want to get lost,” said Nathan as he backed even further away.

“We’re not going to get lost,” said Nancy. “A labyrinth is a special kind of maze. It does have a lot of twists and turns, but there are no wrong ones; if you keep going on the path, you always get to the center.”

“What’s the point of that?” asked Brice. He stuck his hands in his pockets and started kicking at a rock.

“Maybe there’s something special in the center?” Ariel’s voice told everyone she longed for it to be so.

“Maybe,” Nancy said; “maybe there is.”

“What?” asked Nathan as he tried to look through a knothole in the gate.

“I think we’ll have to find out for ourselves.” Nancy looked at her husband. “What do you say?”

Ralph shrugged. “Okay. But who do you suppose the companions are?”

Nancy smiled. “Another one of life’s mysteries..”

Custom Orders

I stitch a great deal of patience, energy, love, and joy into my quilt designs. From the initial consultation to final production, I create them to be your companion. As a child you may have had a security blanket - the soft feel of the fabric and familiar colors, textures, and smells provided a safe escape in times of trouble and a comfort in the solitude dark nights. Now that we are older, we sometimes find ourselves longing for those days when we could cling to something tangible to comfort us. Just as beads enable a monk to focus on meditation, so can a healing blanket help you to focus on your own inner self, to find healing, within yourself.

Healing Path and Animal Totem Labyrinth Quilts

In following a labyrinth’s winding path, you find your way to the center, the interior realm, your own true Self. You cannot get lost on this path, though you may not always know exactly where you are or how far you are from the center. Quilted fabric conveys warmth, safety, and a sense of belonging. Combined with a labyrinth design meaningful to you (such as a labyrinth put onto the shape of a special animal totem, like a turtle, bear, or owl), this work of art can be a tool for you to use at your own pace to discover the benefits of this ancient form.

  • Discover a new sense of calmness at your center
  • Find your self in the renewed expression of your own journey
  • Mark a significant point in your life journey with meaningful symbols

This plain stitched design enhances focus on the act of tracing through the labyrinth. The labyrinth quilt can be a bare-bones, stitched, lap-sized, labyrinth-only style  (as in the one shown here), or they can be one of a variety of animals shapes, or they can be pieced, with the labyrinth placed on a background with Celtic or other borders framing it, and family photos or symbols (of dreams, businesses, etc.) added to make it a truly unique work of art.

If you would like to order a custom quilt, please let me know what you have in mind so I can discuss it with you first, to see what kind of design fits you best, and give you a quote.

As an added benefit to my customers, I provide for them a labyrinth companion story. It’s meant to spark your imagination be a reminder of how simple sometimes the first step can be, even when there are many unsure ones ahead. Read an excerpt from this story if you like.

Laurel’s Writings

Healing Without Fear

When Laurel Ann Reinhardt discovered a lump in her breast she witnessed firsthand how fear holds silent reign over the patient in the Western health care system and hinders the process of healing. This fear is systematically perpetuated by doctors and insurance agents, and it has become the cultural norm––undermining the foundation of all healing and the important work these providers are meant to perform.

The Thundering YearsThe Thundering Years

by Julie Tallard Johnson
(with a chapter on dreams by Laurel Reinhardt
According to native traditions, the Thundering Years are the time in life to listen to intense feelings, dreams, desires, and goals–to be outrageous and even difficult. The Thundering Years are the teen/young adult years, the time when you are journeying into adulthood. They are exciting years, full of potential and creative energy, and they are painful years, full of turmoil and self-examination. The Thundering Years offers wisdom from cultures around the world to help you survive your Thundering Years with your soul, creativity, and even sense of humor intact.

A Guiding Hand for Re-igniting De-light Within

Preparing to WalkNew beginnings. Many of us find reasons to pause in our lives—to reflect and to seek guidance. Be it in a time of joy or fear, or in contemplating a great change, you may wish to seek the assistance of one who can help you make clear choices and approach the future with a positive outlook as you re-ignite de-light within.

Walking the LabyrinthI use a variety of techniques to coach you thorough life’s journey. In particular I offer opportunities for re-discovering, re-membering, re-creating, re-capturing the joy, freedom, creativity, and openness you experienced as a child. Be it for a long walk, or a short one, I can walk with you, and urge you forward toward new and as yet undiscovered places. The path itself is a process of self discovery, of inner journey, of putting one step carefully ahead of the other. There is no need to hurry; fear and uncertainty often push us to make unwise choices.

At the CenterWith each arrival at our center, we open our arms to embrace the life that is ours. Past, present, and future, all bound as one. In this timeless place, there is perspective. There is an awareness of the richness of all that our lives are. Just as my quilts symbolize light and dark woven together, a tapestry where the path is just as wondrous as the center itself, so you can learn to slow down and find the riches on the path as you move to and from your own center.

Art and Inspiration—Labyrinths and More

The labyrinth is an ancient tool for self discovery. In following a winding path, you find your way to the center, the interior realm, your own true Self. You cannot get lost on this path, though you may not always know exactly where you are or how far you are from the center.

In putting this concept into quilt form, the path is made from one fabric, while the rest of the quilt is made up of fabrics of a variety of colors and patterns representing things already seen, or hoped to be seen, along the way.  At the center rests a mandala pattern of your choosing.

Whether you make your own labyrinth quilt from my pattern, or have me make one for you, each is unique because the fabrics for the path and all that you see along the way are chosen with you or your family in mind.  I recommend finer cottons from specialty quilt shops, though any 100% cotton fabric will do. You can also order specially-dyed fabrics to make your quilt even more unique.

Your labyrinth quilt can be a bare-bones, labyrinth-only style (the octagon you see here), or the labyrinth can appear on a background with Celtic or other borders framing it, and family photos or symbols (of dreams, businesses, etc.) added to make it a truly unique work of art.

Though most of my art is labyrinth-related, you will also see works related to Chinese five element theory, meditation, images of great galaxies or sub-atomic particles, or items made just for the sheer fun of it (ex: I now make multi-colored purses/travel bags with laptop computer inserts).
